Academic and Career Development Services (ACDS) is comprised of three units: Career Services Center, Academic Advising Center, and Tutoring Center. Our organizational structure is designed to provide integrated services to support students in becoming confident, independent learners who consider and develop their academic plans within the context of their unique talents and aspirations and the opportunities and challenges that will await them when they complete their studies at Western.

As our Career Counselor, you will assist students and alumni in developing academic and career goals via career exploration, knowledge of WWU's educational programs and consideration of personal interests, skills and values. You will help students understand the various ways they can leverage their experiences inside and outside of the classroom to prepare themselves to be competitive candidates for employment after graduation. With a focus on STEM majors and a knowledge of job market conditions, you will assist individuals in developing effective internship and job search strategies. You will make presentations to classes and student groups on career related topics and coordinate events such as info fairs and panel presentations designed to help students expand their career awareness and connect with opportunities. You will also assist in providing academic advising and class registration assistance during new student orientation programs.

Your responsibilities will include:

Providing counseling to assist individuals in:
Identifying potential majors and careers
Exploring career fields and job market conditions
Identifying ways to leverage their experiences in order to have a strong resume to present to employers
Developing effective strategies to identify internship and career employment opportunities
Master specific aspects of the internship/job search process such as networking, cover letter and resume writing, interviewing and salary negotiation
Conducting strategic outreach and presentations to departments, classes and student clubs to provide discipline specific career information
Coordinating fairs and panels with academic departments and campus programs and assist in the promotion of these events
Creating and updating materials for presentations and use by Career Center visitors and helping keep specific content up-to-date on the website
Participation in Transitions and Summerstart summer orientation programs as well as all off-quarter orientation programs
Master's degree (completed by time of employment)
Minimum of two years of experience providing career counseling to clients/students
Exhibit knowledge of web-based career and job search resources
Demonstrated experience in using career assessment and job search tools with clients/students
Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to make effective presentations
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with culturally diverse populations
Apply strong organizational skills while managing multiple job responsibilities
Demonstrated understanding of the value of integrating academic advising and career development issues when assisting students in formulating academic and career plans
Display high degree of professionalism in interactions with clients/students and stakeholders
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Undergraduate degree in STEM or social science
Graduate degree in student affairs, counseling, or related field; or in a STEM field
Previous relevant work experience in a higher education setting
Experience with event coordination
Science, technology, or business recruiting experience
Experience working with international students

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
