The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Center for Leadership & Service (CLS). The Division: The Division of Student Life is comprised of over 400 staff that serve our students through 19 departments and functions. Staff are actively engaged in the lives of our students, living and learning with them in our residence halls, student union, and other campus environments. The Division seeks candidates willing to engage, challenge, and support our students through intentional programs and services. In addition, we seek colleagues that are committed to teamwork and have a palpable passion for working with and serving all students.

The Center for Leadership & Service: The mission of The Center for Leadership & Service (CLS) is to educate and engage all students to lead and serve the global community. This is accomplished through an intersection of programs and services open to any student interested in furthering their leadership skills and serving the community. Programs within the CLS include cohort-based leadership development, first-year and emerging leadership education, intensive leadership institutes and conferences, days of service, living/learning communities, alternative break programs and on-going service opportunities that tackle food and shelter insecurity, poverty, literacy, environmental conservation, animal outreach, and healthcare.

The Position: The Director provides overall leadership/management for the Center for Leadership and Service including: overseeing the establishment of goals, initiatives, priorities, polices, and strategic plan of the department; administration of the department budget; staff supervision; development of collaborative partnerships with the campus community; fund-raising initiatives, and assessment.

ADMINISTRATION & STAFF SUPERVISION: Provide overall leadership and management of CLS including department goals based on the strategic plan, marketing and communication efforts, facility management, campus and community outreach programs, department budget development, and management of leadership and service focused endowments; Hire, train, supervise, and develop exempt, non-exempt, graduate assistant, and student staff; Oversee all staff assessment and evaluation procedures and processes; Coordinate combined staff meetings, individual staff meetings, staff evaluations/feedback, and professional development plans; Assist with Division of Student Life and Dean of Students staff initiatives when necessary.

STRATEGIC THINKING, ASSESSMENT, & EVALUATION: Provide overall vision, direction, leadership, and strategic/innovative thinking for CLS; Oversee assessment plan to evaluate student learning, student development, and stakeholder perceptions and review data for constructive improvements of programs and program organization; Ensure consistent reporting, tracking, and evaluation of all department programs; Coordinate department strategic planning/implementation initiatives; Track student leader persistence and retention figures.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT, PROGRAMMING, COURSE INSTRUCTION, & ADVISING: Develop/Implement strategic goals and programs that directly affect leadership and service; Oversee Emerging Leaders, VOLeaders, and Honors Leadership programs; Advise staff in the implementation of programs/events, including cohort-based leadership development, first-year and emerging leadership education, intensive leadership institutes/conferences, days of service, living/learning communities, alternative break programs, and on-going service opportunities; Present programs and serve in an advisory capacity as requested by campus, community, and student constituents; Advise students engaged in leadership and service programs, positions, and courses; Oversee leadership studies courses in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) for the Emerging Leaders and VOLeaders programs; Advise and develop staff who instruct various ELPS courses within the CLS.

INTERDEPARTMENT AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH & COMMUNICATION: Communicate with and cultivate relationships with community partners within local service agencies; Meet regularly with community and campus partners to plan/collaborate on upcoming events; Advise staff member who maintains a community partners’ on-line database and service request form; Represent CLS and the Division of Student Life on various campus committees and through volunteering at campus events; Chair various CLS committees incorporating various campus and community partners; Collaborate with closely aligned departments, most notably ELPS, on co-sponsored initiatives and programs.

Qualifications

Education:
Master's Degree in college student personnel or other fields related to the delivery of services to student populations

Experience:
5 years full-time experience working in student life with a commitment to the educational development and success of students; Experience advising student organizations and groups; Experience supervising/coaching/ evaluating student and/or staff members; Experience in budget/fiscal management, assessment/evaluation, and working with campus/community partners.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of student development, leadership development, and service-learning theory, and their application to professional practice in higher education/students affairs; Strong student advocacy skills of community building, relationships, and rapport with students and campus constituents; Ability to work and collaborate with internal and external constituents to foster positive/productive relationships; Strong interpersonal, listening, presentation, organization, and oral/written communication skills; strong work ethic, initiative, event and retreat planning, supervision and management, and have the ability to make sound decisions

Preferred

Education:
Doctoral Degree in college student personnel or other fields related to the delivery of services to student populations

Experience:
Professional experience in the area of leadership and service; Administrative experience in program planning and student life at the college level; Demonstrated innovation, creativity and strategic planning from the lens of leadership education; Experience in oversight/coordination and of leadership development and service programming; Experience in development/fundraising/stewardship initiatives and classroom instruction.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to think big-picture about the mission of the University and how the CLS supports this from a macro- and micro-level.
