At Shoreline Community College, our students have a unique opportunity to combine understanding of science and engineering in both our courses and degrees. The Associate in Science Transfer degree is designed to provide students with a broad liberal arts background of study during their first and second years of college with an emphasis on physical sciences. The Chemistry department provides educational experiences and opportunities to all students interested to study and take classes in fields of chemistry, along with many other STEM disciplines. We address many of the fundamental aspects of today’s high-tech world, and prepare students to become the problem solvers of tomorrow.

The Instructional & Classroom Support Technician 3 will perform professional/technical instructional support of chemistry courses involving the use of scientific, technical and/or academic subject matter knowledge.

Essential Job Duties:
• Coordinating instructional support activities for the daily operation and function of the chemistry labs
• Assigning/advising students in laboratory settings or in discipline subject matters
• Writing, editing or modifying laboratory handouts or manuals
• Modifying and setting up experiments
• Constructs and tests equipment used for lecture demonstrations and laboratory experiments
• Advising instructors of potential problems with existing programs
• Assisting instructors with lecture/laboratory material
• Monitoring laboratories to ensure compliance with safety procedures
• Instructing and supervising students using lab equipment. This includes, but not limited to: UV/Vis Spectrophotometers, NMR, FTIR, GC, Polarimeters, and Refractometers.
• Determining need for materials, equipment and instruments necessary for assigned course load, as well as ordering/stocking the necessary items
• Supervising students working on special project, work-study and/or hourly students
• Other duties as assigned of a similar level/nature

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor’s degree in basic or applied science
• Two (2) years of experience as a Chemistry Instructional & Classroom Support Technician
OR
• Equivalent combination of education and experience

KNOWLEDGE OF:
• Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and/or PowerPoint
• Inorganic and Organic Chemistry fundamentals
• Supplies, materials, and instruments used in the Chemistry labs
• Repair, and maintenance (basic hardware/software calibration) of laboratory instrumentation
• Laboratory safety procedures, including the safe handling of hazardous materials
• State and federal regulations regarding chemical and safety standards
• Clerical processes such as filing, tracking inventories, scheduling, creating correspondence, and responding to inquiries

SKILL IN:
• Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and competence
• Time management, organization, and ability to meet competing deadlines/priorities
• Entering and/or retrieving data accurately in computerized record keeping systems
• Writing/editing/proofreading clear and concise materials resulting in effective oral and written communication with individuals inside and/or outside of the College
• Establishing/maintaining effective working relationships at all organizational levels
• Supporting instructional needs of Chemistry students in small groups or one-on-one settings
• Ability to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and the public in a friendly, courteous and helpful manner
