Location
The Williams Institute, a national research center on sexual orientation and gender identity law and policy at UCLA School of Law, seeks an experienced and innovative graphic designer with a passion for data visualization to advance the work of the Institute.

The Graphic Designer will work with senior staff and researchers to establish our brand identity and shape visual strategy at the Williams Institute. The Graphic Designer will conceive and design materials that promote the Institute’s research, including data visualizations, graphs, charts, infographics, and self-published reports. The Graphic Designer will also design and create visual content for the Williams Institute’s webpage and social media channels and produce marketing and event materials. The position is central to promoting the activities and accomplishments of the Williams Institute to target audiences and the general public.

Job Duties
  • Develop and maintain a visual style guide for Williams Institute design
  • Design Williams Institute publications (e.g., reports, briefs, fact sheets)
  • Partner with public policy and legal scholars to design data visualizations and infographics that accompany new studies by establishing a creative strategy and design ideas
  • Present complex and challenging written material and data visually to enhance its clarity and impact
  • Create graphic designs for the Institute’s website and social media channels
  • Collaborate with the communications and development teams to create marketing materials (e.g., Annual Report, Impact Report)
  • Collaborate with the development team to create event materials, including event invitations, flyers, posters, and brochures to meet the Institute’s promotional and communications objectives
  • Design assets for special programs, such as the Williams Institute’s 20th anniversary
  • Edit photos and illustrations and maintain updated materials
  • Help maintain data interactives on the Institute’s website

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in design or related field (e.g., graphic design, industrial design, visual design, data visualization)
  • • Minimum 2 years of professional design experience
  • • A portfolio that demonstrates design ability and experience creating a variety of visual content
  • A passion for data visualization
  • Advanced experience working with industry-standard design programs (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop); experience working with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, Periscope) a plus
  • Skills in typography, layout, and graphic design that integrates type and images; experience creating infographics and data visualization a plus
  • Basic CSS/HTML knowledge
  • Ability to transform complex data into clear and compelling graphics for a general audience
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects and designs simultaneously with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to pivot easily from strategic thinking to tactical execution and to adapt effectively to rapidly shifting priorities and high-pressure situations
  • Strong communications, project management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to exercise the highest levels of professional discretion, sound judgment, responsibility, creativity, professional demeanor, original thought, and judgment
  • Commitment to the Williams Institute's mission and passion for improving the lives of LGBT people through independent and rigorous research

Special Instructions
This is a one-year contract position, which may be extended subject to funding and programmatic needs.

Supervision
General supervision is provided by the Communications Director and the senior management team.
