APPOINTMENT: 2018-2019 Academic Year (August 20, 2018– June 14, 2019)

OFFICE HOURS: 1700 Hours over Academic Year (Approx. 40 Hours per week, including some nights and weekends.)

POSITION PURPOSE: The Cross Cultural Centers AmeriCorps VIP Member(s) will primarily assist and support volunteer infrastructure building and outreach efforts. Situated within the Gender Equity Center, the service member will assist with the day-to-day operation of the center, as well as plan, coordinate, and facilitate the production of keynote events including Galentine’s Day, OWN, and Women’s Science Fair. VIP members will increase the number of high-value (skilled and corporate) volunteers providing needed advocacy services for underrepresented populations on campus. VIP members work as a part of a team to coordinate volunteer programs and to coach and support high-value volunteers.

GENDER EQUITY CENTER MISSION STATEMENT:
The Gender Equity Center (GEC) supports and empowers all women identifying students by creating a strong community and offering a safe and comfortable space. With a focus on educating about feminist, womanist, and mujerista based movements, exploring identities through an intersectional lens, and striving for social justice the GEC offers programming and support for all women identified students.

AMERICORPS VIP PROGRAM:
Nationally, AmeriCorps is known as the domestic PeaceCorps and provides a huge array of services to those in need. The AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Project (VIP) is designed to address the significant challenges faced by California communities. Through the program, teams of AmeriCorps members are placed in communities to develop volunteer programs, harnessing the desire to serve to directly impact communities in need. Specifically, these non-profits focus on providing services to children and families.

General Responsibilities
• TRAINING: Attend and participate in AmeriCorps cohort trainings and service days, CCC weekly staff meetings, and attend Dean of Students trainings
• OFFICE: Maintain forty (40) office hours per week (which include staff meeting times), including some nights and weekends
o Meet with staff for project updates and assignments
o Perform administrative duties like photocopying, typing, data entry, and student relations
o General office support
• COMMUNICATION:
o Compose and maintain correspondence on progress and activities
o Collaborate with professional staff and student assistants in the production and execution of CCC events
o Aid in the production marketing and advertising material for dialogues and events including the creation of fliers, calendar events, newsletter notices, social media posts, and promotional material
o Submit reports and a year-end legacy binder for future development of the Cross Cultural Centers
• NETWORKING: Develop relationships and serve as liaison to centers and departments.
• PROGRAMMING:
o Assist with managing the programs and services of each constituent center
o Organize and facilitate socials, events, trainings, and retreats
o Identify and develop leadership opportunities for students in the Gender Equity Center
o Mentor and support student assistants, interns, and volunteers within the designated center
• OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Academic Requirements
• Must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution of higher education
• Must meet all requirements for national service through the AmeriCorps VIP Program
• Must have a flexible schedule (some weekends and evenings required)
Required Qualifications
• Ability to understand, articulate, and learn issues of social justice and cultural competency.
• Ability to work within the philosophy, mission, and purpose of the Cross Cultural Centers
• Must possess knowledge and have involvement with Cal Poly’s campus life
• Have awareness on issues affecting underrepresented communities and willingness to learn more
• Strong interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrated commitment and interest in intersectional pro-women identifying activities and diversity issues
• Self-initiated with good follow-through
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, multi-task, and manage time effectively
• Passion for working with underrepresented population and social justice related issues

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in student leadership and involvement
• Event or programming experience
• Previous or current membership in a culturally or social justice based student organization
• Passion for working with underrepresented population and social justice related issues

About AmeriCorps
• AmeriCorps is not a job; it is a paid service experience through the federal government. AmeriCorps members are not employees of the agency; they are AmeriCorps members serving at a host site.

• The positions focus on building the capacity of agencies by building and strengthening volunteer programs in community agencies and have a fundraising component.
• AmeriCorps is an 11-month service commitment from September 2018 - July 2019.
• All positions are full-time (1700 hours/year).
• Members receive a living allowance of $15,500, paid twice monthly in equal installments throughout the term of service.
• Upon successful completion of AmeriCorps service, members become eligible for an education award (appx. $5,800) that can be used to pay for college and some work training programs or to repay outstanding student loans.
• Members are eligible for health insurance and subsidized child-care for the length of their service term.
